Tapenade - West Los Angeles, California

Address: 11301 W Olympic Blvd, Ste 116, Los Angeles, CA 90064

Items Ordered:
  • Burrata cheese with fresh fig, toasted hazelnut, EVOO, aged balsamic
  • Mushrooms and parmesan polenta with truffle oil
  • Chicken liver parfait with port, country bread, bacon, and cornichons
  • Italian brussels sprouts with currants, pine nuts, parmesan, aged balsamic
  • Tuna tartare and seared sashimi with avocado and ginger orange dressing
  • Banana gratin with almond crust, and vanilla bean ice cream

Tapenade is probably my best kept dining secret. It's hidden by the large Olympic Collection building, and the location has such a rapid turnover, I'm always afraid Tapenade will no longer be there the next time I want to visit. Of all the dishes, definitely try the mushrooms and polenta--it is rich, creamy, and so fragrant with the aroma of truffle oil. Get the brussels sprouts too. They make it in 7 different crispy delicious varieties, but the Italian one described above is probably my favorite. Okay, and the real reason why I love Tapenade? All their happy hour drinks are AMAZING! I especially loved the red wines I tried (Pinot, Cabernet, Tempranillo, Merlot), but the food is great even without any libations ;). If you're ever near Little Osaka or looking for a great happy hour location, then definitely give Tapenade a try!

Thanksgiving 2013 - Houston, Texas

Happy Non-Turkey Day everyone!! I get to spend time in Texas with my family, and we're having a Chinese feast with some of my favorite home-cooked dishes. I'm thankful for all this delicious food, my family, friends, health, and happiness. I hope everyone is feeling thankful and most importantly, stuffed like a turkey today and every day!

School Food Blooming Roll - Los Angeles, California

Address: 621 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90005

Items Ordered:
  • Squid ink kimbap with teriyaki squid
  • Special Roll III: anchovies, teriyaki beef, radish
  • Mandu (dumplings) spicy ramen
  • Spicy rice cakes with ramen (tobokki on the menu)

Visiting Koreatown in Los Angeles is very reminiscent of walking the streets of Korea--the only difference, you probably shouldn't literally walk the streets cuz you'll get mugged...Other than that, whenever I have a craving for spicy dishes, kbbq, soju, noraebang and then hangover soup after too much soju, I visit K-town for my fix. School Food, a chain restaurant in Seoul, transported to Ktown in L.A. back in 2010, and it usually has a line out the door. Obviously, the prices are inflated, but the tobokki (spicy rice cakes) are indeed quite spicy, and taste just like they would on the streets of Seoul. The kimbap (rice rolls) don't taste particularly spectacular, but the fact that they are shareable and offered in so many varieties makes this restaurant a fun place to visit. To fend off boredom while you wait for your food, there are entertaining KPop videos displayed on the wall that my boyfriend probably has TOO much fun watching. I'd revisit School Food; it's a fun place to catch up with friends over shared dishes.

Extraordinary Desserts - San Diego, California

Address: 1430 Union St, San Diego, CA 92101

Items Ordered:
  • Apple pie (I think?!)
  • Chocolate sundae

I'm gonna go ahead and stereotype myself and say, I'm a girl, and I love desserts! I spent so long gazing at the rows of beautifully displayed desserts at Extraordinary Desserts until finally settling on a beautiful apple pie. I remember it being tasty, but not the best dessert I've ever had--probably could've used the addition of ice cream. Doesn't really matter though because it looked so pretty!! I would return to Extraordinary Desserts, especially with girlfriends, since with the plethora of amazing desserts to look at and try, I'm sure I'll eventually fall in love with one of them. I would love to return soon to see if they have themed desserts for Halloween and Christmas!

Sasaya - West Los Angeles, California

Address: 11613 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

Items Ordered:
  • Agedashi mochi
  • Skewers: chicken meatball (tsukune), asparagus wrapped pork (buta maki), ribeye
  • Salted grilled mackerel (saba shioyaki)
  • Tuna sashimi and spicy tuna over rice (maguro don)
  • Not pictured: snow crab porridge (kani ojiya), fried eggplant & ground chicken (nasu soboro), simmered pork and egg in a sweet soy sauce (kurobuta kakuni), cheesecake

I love everything here at this neighborhood izakaya. There are so many interesting dishes, and everything is flavorful and unique. Of the dishes I've tried so far, I highly recommend the nasu soboro (you can also order it over rice), the fatty and delicious kurobuta kakuni, and the maguro don since it's a large portion of rice that you can use to eat with the other dishes. I wonder how many trips it might take for me to try the entire menu--I'm sure I'd leave each visit with a satisfied belly. This is a great place to bring friends who enjoy good food, but just be aware the restaurant is super small, but they take reservations. If you visit, let me know what are some other must try dishes!

Hawaii (Oahu) Eats - Honolulu, Hawaii

Locations:
  • Ted's Bakery - chocolate haupia cream pie
  • Tiki's Grill and Bar - loco moco
  • Ono Seafood - spicy ahi and tako (octopus) poke
  • Iyasume Musubi - spam musubi, etc
  • Chef's Luau - traditional Hawaiian foods (poi, lomi lomi, roast pig, etc)
  • Giovanni's Shrimp Truck - garlic shrimp with rice
  • Bubbies - mochi ice cream
  • Leonard's Bakery - masaladas
  • Not pictured: mai tais and pina coladas galore; Matsumoto's shaved ice, clear blue waters

Oh Hawaii, how I miss your clear waters, giant turtles, and delectable dishes lacking any greenery. I wish I was back in Oahu still, but I guess these food pictures will have to suffice. If you haven't been to any of the places above, then I definitely recommend Ono Seafood's house specialty tako poke, and Giovanni's garlic shrimp--bring cash so you can get 2 plates of the buttery, garlicky shrimp. If you're staying in the touristy part near Waikiki Beach--like I did, cuz I'm a tourist--then, go off the beaten path to a little alleyway for Iyasume Musubi; you won't be disappointed! You can get delicious spam musubis for an amazing price. I can't wait to go back to Hawaii for all the great seafood, sweets, frozen drinks, and beautiful beaches! Next time though I'll be posting my eating adventures from Maui.

Umamicatessen - Los Angeles, California

Address: 852 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014

Items Ordered:
  • Truffle beet salad - ricotta, smoked almonds, baby arugula, truffle dressing
  • Quinoa salad - chickpeas, bell pepper, tomato, cukes, citrus vinaigrette
  • Crispy pig's ears - with parsley, lime, brainase
  • PIGG style fries - pickled peppers, ham puree, brainase
  • Truffle burger - house made truffle cheese, truffle glaze
  • Pastrami reuben - kraut, swiss cheese, house spread
  • Meyer lemon curd donut - yogurt glaze, freeze-dried blueberries
  • Bread pudding - whiskey, dried fruit, zested orange cream cheese
  • Honeycomb ice cream

I've been on a winning streak with the restaurants I've tried recently. Umamicatessen was delicious; I enjoyed every dish and drink we tried, but there are a few must orders. 1) Pastrami reuben - seriously, the most tender and flavorful pastrami I've EVER tasted. If I could eat this for lunch everyday, my life would be complete 2) Bread pudding - so good..I can't even describe it to you. Order this dessert!! 3) Honeycomb ice cream - very inventive, not too sweet...does it come in anything larger than a pint?! The 100% lard fried pig ears and fries are also amazing. Umamicatessen has way more options than any of the Umami Burger locations, but they still make a scrumptious truffle burger. As I'm writing this, I'm imagining myself getting my hands on the amazing pastrami reuben again. Don't delay; bring some friends and come to Umamicatessen for a delicious indulgence asap!!

Drago Centro - Los Angeles, California

Address: 525 S Flower St, Los Angeles, CA 90071

Items Ordered (DineLA menu):
  • tagliolini pasta, seafood ragout, spicy marinara
  • buffalo mozarella, tomatoes, basil, balsamic crumble
  • diver scallops, garlic risotto cake, watercress, zabayon
  • sausage stuffed quail, shaved fennel, garlic aioli
  • vanilla panna cotta, black mission figs, rosemary puff pastry
  • chocolate and olive oil terrine, salted caramel gelato, almonds

I was unbelievably excited to finally try Drago Centro during DineLA last week. Last minute reservations on a Saturday night were easy to come by, the valet parking was free, and the restaurant decor was absolutely gorgeous. So many things going right for Drago already! The wine pairing during DineLA was $22 for all 3 courses, but they also have reasonably priced carafes of which I selected a lone Sangiovese. Probably my favorite dish of the evening was the seafood pasta. Seasoning was spot on, shrimps were bursty, and the calamari had a nice bite. Just from this pasta starter, I can tell their pasta dishes are probably the stars of the menu. The plating of the buffalo mozarella was so artistic, and I loved running the mozza/basil/tomato combo through the balsamic dots. As for the mains, the scallops were huge and plump, and the garlic risotto cake while deep fried managed to taste light and buttery at the same time. I did enjoy my crispy skinned quail, but stuffed with sausage, it was just a little too heavy for my tastebuds. It wasn't a badly executed dish, but having shared 3 plates of food by this time, my friend and I were already too stuffed to stuff ourselves with any sausage-stuffed quail. Miraculously though, my friend and I managed to find a 3rd stomach for dessert, and we were not disappointed. I wish I had a better picture of the panna cotta, because it was also beautifully plated. It's probably the best version of this dessert I've ever had. The rosemary crisps played really well against the sweet panna cotta. Unfortunately, the chocolate and olive oil terrine was a little mushy, and the salted caramel gelato had melted by the time the plate was delivered. I will let that slide though b/c it was DineLA weekend, and while our server was extremely busy, he still managed to be courteous the whole meal. I really loved the whole dining experience at Drago Centro, and I will surely return for a nice lunch, dinner, hot date, birthday, Wednesday, you name it.

Mo-Chica - Los Angeles, California

Address: 514 W 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90014

Items Ordered:
  • Watermelon margarita - jalapeno infused espolon blanco, watermelon, lime juice, agave nectar
  • Pan con Tuna - grilled bread, spicy tuna, cucumber jalapeno relish, yuzu mayo
  • Anticucho de Pulpo -  grilled octopus, roasted potatoes, jalapeno sauce
  • Chicharron de Pollo - marinated crispy chicken, rocoto aioli
  • Picarones - sweet potato & kabocha (squash) donuts

Who doesn't love the great food and drink options in downtown L.A.? I wish I could go there more often. After visiting San Antonio Winery for free tastings & hitting up Seven Grand's great happy hour whiskey cocktails, I walked across the street to find Mo-Chica with an open table for 2 to help me soak up the libations. Things were really going my way. To continue my drinking trend, I started with a watermelon margarita. It was great, not too sweet or sour or strong--just a nice refreshing drink. We weren't that hungry, and the small plates actually filled us up for the rest of the night. I loved every dish. The tuna was fresh tasting, moderately spicy, and I liked the squishy bread and mayo that it was served with. The grilled octopus had a nice smoky flavor, and was probably my favorite of the evening. The fried chicken tasted just like it's counterpart at Picca, and the meat was still juicy and steaming hot on the inside. The picarones had a nice texture, kind of like eating mochi, except that they tasted a little burnt--although they looked great when the dish arrived. I would definitely return to Mo-Chica, especially when the wait at Bottega Louie is bordering on ridiculous, and I need to combat my low blood sugar or alcohol addiction asap. I hope to make a return visit sooner than later!

Manhattan Beach Post - Manhattan Beach, California

Address:1142 Manhattan Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Items Ordered:
  • Bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuits with maple butter
  • Sticky buns with pecan and brown sugar
  • French toast stuffed with in house ricotta, brooks cherries, marcona almonds
  • Truffle honey laced fried chicken with kholrabi slaw

I don't know how long MB Post has been open, but it's basically been on my to-eat list ever since the first day it opened its doors. I love carbohydrates, and the thought of delicious biscuits really piqued my interest. The bacon cheddar biscuits really did not disappoint. If you've ever thought the cheddar biscuits at Red Lobster were good, then multiply that by 10,000 times, and you'll have MB Post's deliciously soft, buttery and savory biscuits with creamy maple butter. My second favorite dish was the ooey gooey sticky bun that while sweet was not overpowering and had a nice contrast with the crunchy pecans. I liked the French toast too, but I think we ordered too many sweet dishes, and if possible, there might have been too much ricotta stuffed in there. The fried chicken was crispy outside and contained juicy white meat inside, but something about the truffle and honey flavors just didn't work that well for me. Next time, I would try the steak and eggs or the poached eggs with polenta as my savory dish instead. All the dishes and restaurant decor were artfully presented, and if you love brunch, then I highly recommend you give MB Post a try---I'm sure I'll be making a return visit!

Bice Ristorante - San Diego, California

Address: 425 Island Ave, San Diego, CA 92101

Items Ordered (pre-fixe menu):
  • Endive, arugula & radicchio w/ pine nuts & shaved parmesan in a lemon dressing
  • Chicken scaloppini in dry vermouth & caper sauce with mashed potatoes
  • Salmon scaloppini in white wine sauce over creamy barley risotto
  • Tiramisu
  • Espresso panna cotta w/ salted caramel sauce

The pictures of the nicely presented dishes above look kind of nice right? Well, that may be the only positive  thing I have to say about the food we were served at Bice. Firstly, I asked for my salad dressing on the side, and turns out the dressing is just pure lemon and nothing else! After squeezing just a tad on my salad, it was already way too tangy, and made me think the entire salad was not very imaginative. Just vegetables w/ some parmesan shavings and squeeze of lemon? An 8-year old might be able to make this dish. Secondly, the chicken scaloppini was definitely oversalted, while the mashed potatoes were extremely bland. Maybe, the chef thought the extremes in seasoning would balance each other out? Unfortunately, the salmon scaloppini did not fare much better--the fish was flavorless and overcooked, and the barley risotto was a watery mess. Not at all like the creamy, rich risottos of my dreams. The only thing, I kind of enjoyed was my tiramisu, but it probably was not made in-house, so I can't give any credit to the chef there =/. I don't think I've ever had a worse meal AND at $75/person for the prix fixe options, the whole experience was severely overpriced. I would never go back to Bice and hope you don't have to suffer through the same dining experience.

Milo and Olive - Santa Monica, California

Address: 2723 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90403

Items Ordered:
  • Wood fired garlic knot with EVOO and sea salt (not pictured)
  • Milo chopped salad: tomato, red onion, pepperoni, fresh mozarella w/ red wine vinaigrette
  • Spinach salad with corn and walnuts (special of the day)
  • Linguine with mushrooms, corn, and ricotta (special of the day)
  • Housemade pork belly sausage pizza: braised greens, tomato, fresh mozarella

I love all things bakery, and I have to say Milo and Olive is like the perfect restaurant for me: there are pizzas, pastas, baked goods, beer, and they're open late! The pizzas are delicious (albeit a tad too greasy), the garlic knot is a flavorful, bready mess, and you can use the remaining garlic as a spread or in other dishes--totally worth it! Definitely try their salads if you visit, both that I've tried were delicious, and even the vegetarian pasta special we tried was amazing. Milo and Olive really does carbohydrates justice, and I would definitely recommend you try it for yourself.

On another note, I really need a new camera besides my old point and shoot! I like blogging just to document and remember good meals that I've had, but the best part of food blogs has to be staring at delicious food pictures. With that said, I'm really jealous of other people's amazing blog pictures, especially when it makes me want to lick my computer screen. Any good camera suggestions are appreciated!

Farmshop - West Los Angeles, California

Address: 225 26th St, Brentwood, CA 90402

Items Ordered:
  • Farm egg salad w/ mixed greens, beets, and brioche toast
  • Frittata w/ mushrooms, onion confit, and frisee
  • Granola w/ Straus family creamery yogurt

Living on the outskirts of Brentwood inspires me to dream of richness and dine at fancy restaurants. Farmshop was one of the fancy restaurants on my Brentwood to-eat list (the other one is Tavern), and I thought I'd bring some of my Houston visitors along. I thought my egg salad was masterfully prepared, and the butter lettuce in my mixed greens salad was refreshing. The frittata tasted healthy, and the granola homemade. Nothing was too salty or fatty, and I told myself that if I were a celebrity I would eat here whenever I wasn't drinking my lemon/cayenne pepper juice cleanse in preparation for the Oscars. However, my Houston friends are much less delusional than I am, and promptly after this meal, they asked "Where are we really going to eat for lunch now?" So while I had a nice snack at Farmshop and would probably return to try the acclaimed fried chicken one day, the winning meal of my day was really the fatty and rich Daikokuya tonkatsu ramen that came after this lunch. Who says you can't have the best of both worlds?

Salt's Cure - Los Angeles, California

Address: 7494 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

Items Ordered:
  • Pretzel dog with housemade ground mustard
  • The Bookworm sandwich - grilled ham sandwich with braised kale & swiss cheese

Sometimes living in L.A., I get jealous that I'm not a hipster, or a Real Housewife, or a valley girl, or Selena Gomez. So I try to at least eat at places that will make me feel like I belong. Thus, in true hipster fashion I visited Salt's Cure to try their locally sourced, homemade dishes. The Bookworm definitely tasted fresh, but was a little too mild in flavor, while the housemade ground mustard overpowered the tastiness of the sausage. I liked Salt's Cure just fine, but it didn't really blow me away. Since the hipster persona is not working out for me, I will let y'all know in next week's post how my bourgeoisie personality is coming along :).

Breadbar - Century City, California

Address: 10250 Santa Monica Blvd, Century City, CA 90067

Items Ordered:
  • Chicken noodle soup
  • French onion soup with emmenthal cheese
  • Wild halibut pico de gallo, carrots, spinach
  • Catch of the day (bass?) with capers, brussels sprouts, and potatoes
  • Happy hour: pepperoni pizza, burger and fries
  • Bread pudding

Would I go back to Breadbar? Yes! In fact I've already revisited for the amazingly warm and toothsome bread pudding more than once. It's not overly sweet, and is probably the best version I've tried to date. I'm glad that "Breadbar" can live up to its name with the fantastic bread pudding. I'm also a sucker for cheese, especially when it's warm and melty like in French onion soup. If you're a fan, try this dish as well; I couldn't stop drinking it. If that wasn't enough to convince you to give Breadbar a try, both fish entrees we ordered were flaky and well-seasoned. They were also relatively light enough to leave stomach space for dessert. I would recommend visiting during regular hours as the happy hour dishes are just mediocre and probably not the restaurant's best showing. If you visit, let me know if you agree with me about the delicious bread pudding!

Gordon Ramsay at The London - West Hollywood, California

Address: 1020 N San Vicente Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Items Ordered (DineLA):
  • Lamb belly w/ Spanish chorizo, stewed gigante beans, jalapeno sauce
  • Chanterelle mushroom risotto w/ sauteed scallop & quail egg
  • Short rib served w/ Yorkshire pudding & bacon wrapped asparagus
  • Tai snapper w/ coconut milk, shrimp curry broth over jasmine rice
  • Lemon tart
  • English sticky toffee pudding w/ mascarpone cheese & brown butter ice cream

Items Ordered (Afternoon Tea@Boxwood Cafe):
  • Teas - rose w/ French vanilla & Mediterranean Mandarin teas
  • Freshly baked scones w/ devonshire cream & lemon curd
  • Sandwiches -black brioche w/ smoked salmon & cucumber, hummus w/ crisp shallots, curried chicken w/ golden raisins, roast beef w/ red onion marmalade
  • Cakes - honey madeleine, L'opera cake, apple crumble, lemon meringue bar, fresh fruit tart

I tried to limit myself to only one DineLA restaurant in January, and luckily Gordon Ramsay's restaurant at The London did not disappoint. I thought every dish tasted amazing, except the lamb belly since it was a little too fatty, and I'm not a huge fan of lamb anyways. We should've gotten 2 orders of risotto instead. The creamy risotto was flavorful, the scallop cooked perfectly, and the quail egg added some richness--this was probably the best risotto I've ever eaten! The short rib entree was tender, and my tai snapper had a nice crispy skin, not to mention the Jasmine rice was fluffy and went well with the curry broth. I wish I could recreate this dish at home, it was so comforting and flavorful. The desserts were good, but definitely not the most memorable part of the meal. If you visit, definitely try the risotto option and Tai snapper--I'm still salivating over those dishes now!

Since we received $20 off a return visit, I thought it'd be a good idea to try their afternoon tea the 2nd time around. The scones had just the right amount of sweetness and weren't too dense. They were delicious with the lemon curd and cream. The savory sandwiches were interesting, but the breads were a little dry. The cakes were ridiculously cute, and my favorite from that plate was definitely the apple crumble since it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. However, I wasn't impressed with the fruit tart since the cream tasted a little artificial and resembled something I could've purchased at the grocery store. I learned a lesson after having afternoon tea with my boyfriend...don't bring boys to tea, they will still be hungry after the miniature offerings! I guess Gordon Ramsay is a little warranted in his tirade against other chefs since I was pretty impressed with the dishes at The London. Try it and let me know if you agree.

Philly Eats - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Locations:
  • Pat's King of Steaks
  • Reading Terminal Market (Tommy DiNic's, Miller's Twist, Famous 4th St Cookie Co)
  • Franklin Fountain

Items Ordered:
  • Cheesesteak wit wiz (Pat's)
  • Roast pork w/ provolone and broccoli rabe (DiNic's)
  • Chocolate chip w/ walnuts, chocolate peanut butter, oatmeal cookie (4th St Cookie Co)
  • Soft pretzel (Miller's Twist)
  • Hydrox cookies 'n cream, mint chip (Franklin Fountain)

I love visiting the East Coast. Everything is so much more historical than in LA (I still love you LA!). This was my second trip to Philly, but I loved it way more since I got to try so many delicious foods. The steak in Pat's cheesesteak was flavorful and the bread was crusty. I dunno 'bout Geno's, but they really do have some competition! No matter, the winner of Best Sandwich in America at Tommy DiNic's was the clear sandwich champion. The pork was juicy and plentiful, and the garlicky broccoli rabe was an excellent addition. Don't forget to try the soft pretzel from Miller's Twist...those Pennsylvania Dutch can make a mean pretzel! Oh, and there's also amazing cookies and ice cream. Go visit Philly! And bring me something back please! Thanks :).

  • Pork belly bao buns - hoisin glaze, pickled daikon & carrot, togarashi mayo
  • Duck taco - duck confit, house kimchi, sliced radish, flour tortillas

  • Humita - charred corn, tamale, bacon, mushrooms, aji cream
  • Bien me sabe - coconut cake & cream, guava ice cream
  • Suspiro - lemon custard, meringue, alfajores

Gong xi fa cai! Happy New Year everyone!

What does Iron Chef Jose Garces have to do with Chinese New Year's?? Well, his restaurant Chifa in Philly is actually a Peruvian and Asian fusion restaurant. All the dishes we tried were inventive and absolutely amazing. The pork belly buns had just the right amount of fattiness with a great sweet glaze, the duck taco was well-balanced with the kimchi, and the chaufa was like a cross between paella and fried rice that really worked. I won't hesitate to say that Chifa is one of the best restaurants I've ever visited since starting this blog. I'm so impressed by Jose Garces that it makes me actually want to watch Iron Chef America. If you live in or visit Philly, I highly encourage you to make a reservation...STAT!

Susan Feniger's Street - Los Angeles, California

Address: 742 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Items Ordered:
  • Kaya toast - Singapore toast w/ coconut jam, soft egg, dark soy, & white pepper
  • Potato samosas - tamarind date chutney, cucumber chile, & mint yogurt
  • Shaved kale and brussels sprouts -goat cheese & lemon picada
  • Rickshaw rice bowl (rotating) - shrimp, eggs, & Chinese broccoli w/ chili sauce
  • Mediterranean chicken wings - tzatziki ranch & pickled radish

Who doesn't like papaya salad eaten off the streets of Thailand, Japanese ramen for cheap in Tokyo, and rice bowls in practically any Asian country? Well, Susan Feniger's Street tries to recreate those inspiring dishes, but in a nice, clean restaurant setting in the great city of L.A. (with upgraded prices to match). The dishes at Street were fantastic. I liked how the plates were shareable and that there were so many options from different countries to choose from. You should definitely get the kaya toast, the blend of sweet from the kaya jam and salty from the soy sauce and egg makes for a delicious bite each time. The samosas were crunchy, and the chicken wings were fall off the bone tender. I love my veggies--and even more so when they're mixed with cheese so I would recommend the shaved kale & brussels sprouts as well. The only disappointment was the rice bowl, which was meant to be homey, but probably too literally so. I could make this dish myself at home, have it taste the same, and feed 2-4 for less than $12. Maybe I was just expecting something more like fried rice or requiring more technique/assembly since it's supposed to be fancier street food. Overall, I was impressed with the recreation of classic street food dishes, and I'd still definitely return to Street and try the rest of their menu items.

Cafe Gratitude - Venice, California

Address: 512 Rose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90291

Items Ordered:
  •  I AM IMMORTAL - tonifying elixir w/ Reishi, Shilajit and Ormus. Served hot with coconut milk and raw honey
  • I AM HAPPY - Mediterranean wrap with live falafels, zucchini cilantro hummus, spinach, red onion, tomato, cucumber, red chili pepper sauce and garlic tahini dressing on live sun-dried tomato bread
  • I AM LIBERATED - Creamy hemp seed pesto pasta with kelp noodles, heirloom cherry tomatoes, green and kalamata olives and  spinach topped with brazil nut parmesan and fresh basil
  • Dessert (forgot the name) - warm peach and berry compote with vegan ice cream

Happy New Year everyone! I really do hope your wishes become a reality in 2013. What are your food-related resolutions for this year? Mine is to stop eating chocolate for 6 months! It's quite sad, but makes my dessert options at restaurants easier to choose. I'll give you guys an update in June on my progress (if I don't break before then).

What better way to start the new year than spouting some uplifting phrases and eating some vegan food? I was very amused with the names of the dishes at Cafe Gratitude, and almost wanted to order everything off the menu just so I could say "I am magical and awesome." But I suppose all that food would defeat the purpose of healthy eating. We started with the I AM IMMORTAL drink, which if I were to sum up with one word, would be...terrible. Please try something else instead. The drink tasted like water with a weird herby taste, and I'm not sure made us immortal. I liked my I AM HAPPY, but realized quickly that vegan bread/wraps are a little too dry =/. The I AM LIBERATED was pretty tasty and well-dressed with their pesto. Kelp pasta kinda looks and tastes like vermicelli in case you were wondering. I really loved the vegan ice cream (made with nuts?) that came with the dessert, but again the compote and fruits were a little dry and overcooked. I know this review doesn't sound that positive, but I liked the concept of Cafe Gratitude and would probably return to try out some of their cooked vegan dishes next time.
